The Tale of the Uninsured Driver

Every year around this this time we trot out familiar horror stories – haunted houses, monsters in the corn maze, things that go bump in the night. None of these are as scary as a story you’ve probably never read, one written in the fine print of your automobile insurance policy – the tale of the uninsured driver.

It's a nightmare…

This frightening story foretells of misfortune that could be averted. The good news is you can change the ending. I tell this story because I see it unfold in real life all too often when clients seek my help after a car accident not because I receive compensation from the insurance companies when someone buys more insurance. I just feel compelled to share.

What if a driver without insurance hurts me?

It’s sad but true that people hit the road without auto insurance despite the law requiring it. North Carolina requires drivers to purchase a minimum amount of auto insurance coverage that protects them against uninsured motorists. If an uninsured driver injures you and it’s their fault, your insurance will cover your losses.

The required minimum uninsured coverages include:

  • $30,000 to cover personal injury losses to any one person
  • $60,000 maximum to cover everyone who is injured in a single collision
  • $25,000 maximum to cover all property damage

But with the cost of medical treatment these days, a short stay in the hospital for a single patient can easily exceed $30,000. If your insurance policy provides just the minimum, it likely won’t be enough.

It’s a nightmare you can avoid!

Talk with your insurance agent about buying additional coverage that protects you if you are injured by an uninsured driver. It’s cheap and it will pay for itself 1,000 times over when you need it.

In case I’m being too subtle here, BUY EXTRA UNINSURED MOTORIST COVERAGE! IT’S CHEAP AND WORTH EVERY PENNY.

Happy Halloween 😊
